Bequest
If I can leave one song to bless the world
Or cheer the hearts of weary, fainting men;
IF I can leave one verse that some may read
And taking heart, rise up to try again;
If I can leave one painting when I go
That shall stop someone’s tears or ease his pain,
Thought I may leave no jewels or gold behind
Then I can know I have not lived in vain.
If I can win some precious soul to Christ
And know that when I leave he’ll carry on,
And maybe win some other to his Lord
To carry high the torch when he is gone;
If some shall stop me in the Gloryland
And say, “I’m here because one day you came
To tell me of the Saviour’s matchless love.”
Then I can know I have not lived in vain.
