Keep Your Eyes On Christ

Jesus told His disciples to cross by boat

While He sent the crowds away,

Then He went alone up the mountainside

To rest while and to pray.

But the boat was now in the midst of a storm,

Tossed to and fro in the night.

When Jesus walked to them on the sea

They cried aloud in their fright.

“Be of good cheer, it is I,” He said.

“If it is you,” Peter cried,

“Tell me to walk on the water to you

That I may be at your side.”

“Come ahead Peter,” the Saviour said.

With his eyes on Christ, he obeyed.

How far he got we are not told

Before he became afraid.

But we know he took his eyes off the Lord

And looked at the thrashing waves.

They were no higher - his faith was gone,

And he sank by the One who saves.

“Help me, Lord!” he was quick to cry,

“Save me and pull me out!”

Jesus reached His hand and rescued him

And chided, “Why did you doubt?

Would I call you to leave your tossing boat

Step out and come to me,

Then abandon you as you neared my side

And let you go down in the sea?”

Then they climbed in the boat, and the wind was calm

Said, “Truly you are the Son of God!”

And they worshiped before the Lord.

One day I heard the Saviour’s call

“Come unto me,” He cried.

I opened my heart and followed Him,

I wanted to be by His side.

He did not promise there’d be no fear,

No storms or restless tide,

But he did promise that He’d be always there

To life me back to His side.

How often I look at the waves around,

“Lord, save me!” I have to plead,

“Lord, help me to keep my eyes on you

So you can meet every need.”
