Only A Babe
He was only a babe, yet more than a babe
As He lay in the manger bare,
And the angels knew, and the shepherds knew
He was God’s dear Son lying there.
And Mary knew as she held Him close
She had God’s own Son to raise,
And her lips were fulfilled with hosannas,
And her heart was full of praise.
And Joseph knew that Messiah,
Foretold by prophets of old,
Awaited so long by His people,
Tonight was their to hold.
And the wise men knew as they followed
The wonderful star above,
That God had sent a Saviour
And they journeyed with gifts of love.
But in all of Bethlehem’s fine hotels,
With all of their padded beds,
Tired travellers laid to rest
And pillowed their weary heads.
And no one knew, and no one cared
As they slept away till morn
That long awaited and now unknown,
The Son of God was Born.
Now no one remembers and no one cares
For the thousands who slept that night,
But the Baby born in a cattle’s stall
Brought Life, and Hope, and Light!
