The Forsaken Son

Could God the Father turn His back

Upon His Son at Calvary?

For hear, the Saviour cries, “My God,

O why has Thou forsaken me?”

His Father is the God of love,

Yet He is holy too, and just:

He cannot look upon our sin

But when He comes to judge it must

Forsake the bearer of the sin

Nor look upon the cursed one;

The wages still of sin is death

E’en though it be upon His Son

Made sin for us, who knew no sin.

There on the cross when Jesus died

The love of God was manifest,

His perfect justice satisfied.

And I, a child of God by faith,

Can face the Father unafraid,

Because I know at Calvary

My judgement fell, my debt was paid.
